A file-to-factory process is a process of design and realization of design which is completely digital. In this process, a design is conceived within CAD/CAM software as a digital 3d-model, and then exported directly to robotic manufacturing machinery that translates the numerical data
into production workpaths, cutting the material in the desired shape. The file-to-factory process changes the role of architectural drawing material from that of representation to production. The represented and the build are no longer divided by interpretation. This connection allow
for a new degree of design control, and inspires a renewed architectural interest in production detail, as the digital models are linked directly to the manufacturing procedures of the production facilities.
