Topology optimisation is a process in which an optimization software calculates the forces in an static problem, such as a slab or a beam.
The problem is modelled within the spatial boundaries of a ‘design space’. The design space is subdivided into smaller cells (finite elements),which
are partly filled with virtual material.
By iterative analysis of the stresses within the design space, the program distributes the virtual material (e.g. simulated steel) to the areas where forces are active, and removes material where they are not. This results in a form, in which material
l is only located where it is needed, thus e.g. creating the maximum stiffness with minimal use of material. The topology optimization studies of this research has been conducted using Altairs Optistruct - an optimization software currently used in aeronautic- and mobile industry.
