As an example of the world’s first topology optimized concrete structure, the full scale prototype of the Unikabeton-project represents a synthesis of the previous research. Carrying a doubly curved, minimal surface concrete membrane, the flow of forces appears directly in the
optimized ribbed structure. Measuring app. 12*5.5 *3.7 meters, the structure is being cast in white concrete. Expected completion in end of January 2010. The prototype exemplifies the capacity for topology optimization to generate rational structures within a high complexity
frame. In simple structural cases, a certain degree of optimization can be reached by empirical design and evaluation. In complex cases -such as the design of optimized rib structures to support a doubly curved surface on 3 asymmetrically positioned columns – the task is almost impos-
